If your kid loves soccer but got a little behind skill-wise in the sport for one reason or the other there is many ways to catch them up to their peers. Its ok for them to be slightly behind a few of the players- this happens all the time. However, there is a certain point where it will have a negative impact on both them and the team. When they are too far behind in skill they really should be matched up with players that are closer to their ability. Not necessarily the same, but closer .
To advance their skills especially at a younger age it is all about time with the ball. The more time spent around the ball the faster they will improve. Ideally they are playing at recess, at home, and then at practice. You don’t want to put any pressure on them, it should be because they love the sport. However if they feel a little frustrated just explain to them why they are a little behind some the other players ( its always time spent playing/ practicing ).
At home practice is very critical at this age. If you can teach them a few ball mastery drills, get in some passing with them, and or just cheer them on as they try new skills they will improve at a very fast rate. A one on one coach can also get their skills up very quickly. Make sure it is someone you trust and someone who motivates your kid. Occasional individual sessions allow players to learn to manipulate the ball. This turns to success on the field.
